ok so what editor/IDE do I use now that VS code has all this AI bullshit in it? I really liked VS code but I do not fuck with AI and won't use a product that ships with AI features built in.
@_nibbles@mastodon.social Still has a big copilot button in the header.
@ash
PyCharm
@ash I don't know if AI crap works out-of-the-box in vscodium
@ash then some people seems to be attempting to keep Atom alive with Pulsar, and there are a few ones that don't mention AI but I haven't tried these yet like... Lapce and lite-xl
All these look the same.
@ash I'm a Sublime Text fan (I work in many different languages) but I have a plan to test out neovim myself.
@troed@swecyb.com @ash@acegiak.net Neovim is nice! Make sure to check out https://github.com/nvim-treesitter/nvim-treesitter and other plugins that can take advantage of what neovim provides. I prefer https://github.com/junegunn/vim-plug as my plugin manager although there's a couple other ones.
@ash You use neovim. The answer is neovim.
And Lazyvim saves faffing around with plugins to get work done. Language servers do most the heavy lifting, just like in vscode.
Modal editing DOES present an initial curve, if unfamiliar, but not nearly as scary as it may seem. And typing is never the bottleneck anyway.
Also, vi is everywhere, so it's a transferrable skill. ✨
And Ghostty is a friendly host: https://ghostty.org
Bullshit you have to bring yourself. 😁
@dln@mastodon.social @ash@acegiak.net yeah neovim is great! Here's a good starting point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8C0Cq9Uv9o
You do have to put in the effort though, that's the thing. I think it's worth it, but I can also see how a lot of people can't be bothered.
If you aren't interested in getting down and dirty with nvim-configs, I've heard pretty good things from KDE's code editor, Kate: https://kate-editor.org/ (doesn't require KDE, or even Linux)
@ash what platform? On macOS I’ve always come back to TextMate but it’s relatively barebones
@ash I've started diving back into Neovim for personal stuff, but I know that's not for everybody. Been wanting to properly try Helix too - but I can't keep two muscle memories at once, and I can't use it at work.
@ash vscodium is supposed to be vscode without all MS stuff. Unsure if that also means no ai
