I wonder how long Americans have been saying "pass out" for the situation where I would say "fall asleep"? I assume it's a result of American hustle culture where "pass out" is presumably admirable because it implies exhaustion from work, while "fall asleep" might be negative because it implies rest and comfort?

Interestingly I always here "pass out" used in the specific tense "I laid down on the couch and passed out" but often those same people still use "fall asleep" in general tense "I can never fall asleep with the lights on"
